The Dragon

The Dragon

The Dragon

Chinese art is amazing. I just love looking at the wide variety of paintings and designs by Chinese artists. The dragon, of course, is one of the most popular subjects with them. Inspired by one such design, I painted this dragon design silhouette.

Medium – Acrylic on paper.

Cranes In The Sunset

Cranes In The Sunset

The crane always looks majestic. Cranes captured against the setting sun create a magnificent image that is so fascinating. I had come across this image pained on a Chinese screen.

Medium used is Watercolor on paper.

I came across this beautiful yet simple design on the cover of a wedding invitation card, which I liked so much that I painted it on silk cloth. Hope you like this one.

Girl In The Sunset

The Girl In The Sunset

Somehow this painting always reminds me of this quote –

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” – Rabindranath Tagore

A Walk In The Rain

Walk In The Rain

A Walk In The Rain

I love to walk in the rain
Look for me when it’s stormy
Down some lazy lane and I’ll be there
I’d love to walk in the rain
The lightning may be frightening
I love the rain so I don’t care
I feel wonderful
When the sky’s above are thunderful
I don’t complain
I know it’s fun in the sun
But take all kinds of weather
When all said and done
I love to walk, in the rain..

(Lyrics of the song by the same title, sung by Shirley Temple)

Medium – Watercolor on paper.

Autumn Glory

I came across this cross-stitch embroidery design almost 22 years ago – the image of an aspen forest. When I completed the design the background was quite dull and did not really highlight the sunlight on the trees. In order to accentuate and highlight the trees I decided to change the surrounding background to black, and this had the desired effect. The forest looked more alive !

Sunset On The Beach

Sunset On The beach

Sunset On The Beach

The golden rays of the setting sun reflect off the surface of the water, colouring the whole atmosphere with an orange hue. Streaks of the blue surf are seen from the shore, as dark clouds move in to engulf the sun…

The medium used is Oil on Oil-sheet.

Dawn In The Forest

Dawn in the forest

Dawn In The Forest

“Through the blackest night, morning gently tiptoes, feeling its way to dawn”.

The early dawn takes on a special hue as the rising sun’s rays gently fall through the foliage of the forest, slowly turning the dark of the night to a lovely blue. The rays that manage to sneak in through the trees fall upon the grass, colouring them a beautiful golden-green. This is the essence that I have tried to capture in this painting.

The medium used is Oil on Oil-sheet.

Women In The Doorway

Women In The Doorway

The Women In The Doorway

Three village women from a performing troupe, standing in the doorway and looking out… two of them partially hidden and the one in the middle holding a “Tanpura” – a musical instrument in her hand. Inspire by an anonymous painting that I had come across.

Medium – Crayons on paper.

Lilies

Lilies

Lilies – Abstract

Here is my rendition of Lilies in the “cubism” format – something that I have tried for the very first time. It does not strictly qualify for the cubism category, though, since I have used only some ‘cubes” in the background while maintaining the white shade in the flowers. I guess you could call it an “abstract”.

This is an Oil on Canvas.

Bamboos

Bamboos

Bamboos

It never ceases to amaze me how something as commonplace as a cluster of bamboos stand out so beautifully in a painting or in a photograph. It is no wonder then that a lot of Chinese and other Oriental paintings have centred around this plant.

This is my humble attempt of capturing these bamboos in a watercolor.

African Woman

The human figure has always been prominent in African art, despite the diversity of cultures in this vast continent. Human figures going about their daily chores are quite common all over Africa, and this is just such a scene that I have tried to capture in this very simple Watercolor. The background used makes the image of this African woman with a basket over her head stand out more prominently.

The Boy In The Rain

Once again, a palette-knife painting depicting a boy running down a street in the rain, holding an umbrella over his head. Even a dull rainy scene can be made bright and colourful with bright colours smeared across the canvas with a palette knife. The reflection of light on the trees and in the water on the street helps to add more colour to the overall effect.

The Peacock

Madhubani

The Peacock – Madhubani

Madhubani painting or Mithila painting is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar state, India and the adjoining parts of Terai in Nepal. Painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments, and is characterized by eye-catching geometrical patterns.

The designs of a Madhubani painting can be as simplistic or as complicated as you want them to be. Also, the colours can be as vibrant as you like. This is my first attempt at a Madhubani using water colurs and pen on paper.
